Electric car sales in 2021: Tesla and VW lead the way

No electric car was sold more in Switzerland in 2021 than Tesla's Model 3. Overall, however, the German Volkswagen Group with its various brands is ahead in terms of sales figures.
The sales figures now published by Auto Schweiz show a clear trend: In Switzerland, electrically driven cars are gaining more and more market share - despite the chip crisis and thus sometimes very long waiting times due to delivery problems. In 2021, more than one in eight cars sold in Switzerland was powered only by electricity. That gives them a market share of 13 percent. In December, the figure was already 23 percent.
In terms of the most sold models, Tesla's Model 3 is outpacing the competition. 5064 units were sold. Volkswagen's ID.2 follows in second place, with 2419 units sold, not even half as many in the statistics.
The top 15 by number of sales
But VW can probably still be quite satisfied with the Swiss car market. If you add up all the sales of pure electric cars from the group in the top 15, the Germans outstrip Tesla. In total, the two VW models ID.3 and ID4 as well as the Skoda Enyaq, the Audi e-tron and the Q4 reach almost 8000 sales. Tesla with the Model 3 and the Model Y "only" just under 6500.
Only a side note in the statistics, by the way, are hydrogen-powered models. In 2021, 66 of these cars with fuel cells were sold, compared to 2020 with 42 a significant increase, but just on a very, very low level. Sales figures for CNG models, i.e. those that burn gas in a conventional engine, really collapsed. From 562 in 2020 to just 282 in 2021. However, this is probably due to the fact that manufacturers have virtually abandoned these technologies.
