El Tony Mate Zero: the same kick, just without the calories
Anyone who wants to avoid sugar when drinking mate now has a new option: El Tony Mate Zero. The Swiss brand is expanding its range with a sugar-free version of its cold-brew mate drink. We have it in the shop.
After a colleague told me that I absolutely had to try El Tony Mate, I acquired a taste for it. As a die-hard espresso drinker, I normally steer clear of tea and energy drinks of all kinds. But this stimulant has won me over.
For those unfamiliar with El Tony, the yerba mate for the drink comes from Argentina, according to the manufacturer. It is gently dried there, which results in a mild flavour. Mate tea is not a new invention. Its revitalising effect was already known to the indigenous peoples of South America. In addition to caffeine, yerba mate naturally contains magnesium, antioxidants and vitamins A, B1, B2 and C.

For El Tony Mate Zero, the tea is brewed using the cold-brew method. The infusion makes up 96 per cent of the drink. To this is added 3 per cent lemon juice from lemon juice concentrate and 0.1 per cent guarana extract. The drink is not sweetened with household sugar, but with acesulfame K, sucralose and cyclamate. Artificial colourings and acidity regulators are not included. The drink is vegan and gluten-free.
The manufacturer describes the flavour as refreshingly tart, with a hint of lemon. I couldn't agree more. You can taste the tea, but with the slight acidity and flavour of the lemon. The caffeine content is 26 mg per 100 ml - comparable to a cup of coffee. This is also the reason why El Tony points out that pregnant women should keep an eye on their consumption and that the drink is not intended for children. The calorific value is 1 kcal per 100 ml, which is practically zero. It also contains no carbohydrates.
