E3 2019: Square Enix unveils the new «Marvel's Avengers» game, otherwise it's mostly remakes

Translation: Patrik Stainbrook

A detailed look at the «Final Fantasy VII» remake and the «Avengers» game were the highlights of Square Enix' press event. The rest consisted mostly of remakes and remasters.

The presentation of the Japanese publisher Square Enix was somewhat one-sided. Like most other press conferences at E3, Square Enix couldn't get rid of the feeling that their best stuff would be saved for next year, the beginning of a new console generation. The show mainly consisted of glammed up «Final Fantasy» games as well as numerous remakes and remasters. All in all, fans should still have got their money's worth.

«Marvel's Avengers»

The studio behind the «Tomb Raider» trilogy is developing a Marvel Avengers game. Don't expect any familiar faces. Even so, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow can still go toe to toe with the best of them. Additional heroes will follow in free updates. The game will be released on 15/5/2020 on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.

«Final Fantasy VII Remake»

The original announcement for this remade JRPG classic was already made three years ago. Finally, after a long drought, we know more about «Final Fantasy VII». Originally, the game was announced to release in an episodic format. Now, however, it seems as if the first part at least will go for the price of a full game. At least, judging from the size of both BluRay discs. The demo shown was as bombastic as expected and demonstrated a tactical approach while fighting a huge scorpion robot.

«Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles»

The Gamecube title «Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles» is getting remastered for Switch, PS4, Android and iOS.

«The Last Remnant Remastered»

Another remaster. This time it's an Xbox 360 title. At least it's available immediately on the Switch.

«Dragon Quest Builders 2»

«Dragon Quest Builders 2» is kind of like «Minecraft» with more roleplaying, farming mechanics and a major graphical update. You can get the game for PS4 on 12/7/2019.

«Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition»

The improved version of this PS4 role-playing game will be released this autumn for the Switch. It contains new features exclusive to the Japanese 3DS version as well as a reworked soundtrack.

«Circuit Superstars»

A cute racing game played from a bird's eye perspective depicting numerous racing eras. It will be published next year.

«Kingdom Hearts 3 Remind»

A short trailer introduced the world to the first «Kingdom Hearts 3» DLC. «Remind» will come out this winter.

«Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers»

«Shadowbringers» is the third expansion for the MMO «Final Fantasy XIV» and will be released on July 6, 2019.

«Romancing Saga 3 and SaGa»

After almost 25 years, these classics have officially surfaced in the West.

«War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius»

A new tactical RPG set in the Final Fantasy universe is under development for Android and iOS. It was already announced back during late 2018. Now we've finally received the first trailer.

«Outriders»

The makers of «Bulletstorm» and «Painkiller» have a new shooter in the works. Wacky weapons and equally crazy monsters are at the centre of this dark sci-fi game. «Outriders» will be released in the summer of 2020.

«Oninaki»

You can try out this stylish action RPG for PC, PS4 and Switch as early as 22 August 2019.

«Final Fantasy VIII»

And yet another «Final Fantasy» title. The eighth entry won't get a remake, but a remaster to release this year for PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

Now you can hear the soundtracks from Square Enix games on music streaming services like Spotify and Co.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
