Digitec Galaxus is young, wild and loves Cevapcici

More than 1,500 people work at Digitec Galaxus. They combine a wide variety of origins and cultures: our pirate crew has 55 different nationalities and an average age of 32 years.

I often hear people speaking about how young and cosmopolitan our company is. But my office neighbours include boomers such as David K., who’s already growing grey hair. Are we really as young as we claim to be? And how international are we really? I decided to get to the bottom of these questions, so I collected and evaluated the data. Numbers never lie, right?

The result? Our crew comes from a total of 55 different countries all over the world, 36 of which are in Europe, 6 in Africa, 5 each in Asia and North America and 3 in South America. The data refers to the citizenship of our staff. This means that the majority of our staff, around 65%, is from European nations. Of these 55 countries around the world, 34 are home country to fewer than 5 employees, while there are only 12 countries that represent more than 10 employees.

The furthest away country is Peru: our Peruvian employee would need 15 hours and 15 minutes by plane to get to a barbecue party in her home country. That's over 10,000 km as the crow flies.

Hamburg – Zurich – Belgrade

From warehouse to offices and back, most of our employees are from the European countries Switzerland, Germany and Serbia. This isn’t surprising, as we’re located in these three countries: in Belgrade, almost 200 professionals with a Swiss background now provide e-mail customer support. We launched Galaxus.de in Germany at the end of 2018. This means, Digitec Galaxus staff aren’t only into Swiss food such as Rösti, Cervelat and Fondue, but also enjoy Serbian Cevapcici and German Currywurst. The three nations combined make up just over 80% of our workforce, both globally and in Europe. 36 European countries are represented across Digitec Galaxus. We thus cover 77% of Europe.

The citizenship charts

The top 10 nations combined make up 92% of our entire company. The remaining countries account for only a small share of 8%, although this still includes about 44 other states such as Guinea-Bissau, Somalia or Liechtenstein.

  1. Switzerland: 1,000 employees (59%)
    2. Germany: 180 employees (11%)
    3. Serbia: 175 employees (10%)
    4. Italy: 56 employees (3%)
    5. Kosovo: 39 employees (2%)
    6. Portugal: 25 employees (1.5%)
    7. Macedonia: 20 employees (1.2%)
    8. Poland: 17 employees (1.0%)
    9. Turkey and Hungary: 16 employees each (0.9% each)
    10. Spain: 14 employees (0.8%)

Between boomers and millennials

As mentioned in the introduction, the average age in our company is 32 years. That’s the exact age of my office neighbour David K. Turns out he’s not a boomer after all. But how high is the share of younger generations such as Generation Z (born 1997 to date) or Millennials/Generation Y (born 1981 to 1996)?

800 employees are between 21 and 30 of age, which is almost half of Digitec Galaxus' workforce (48%) – closely followed by employees aged between 31 and 40 years, who represent a share of 35%. 10% of all employees are between 41 and 50 years of age, 3% are between 51-60 and 16-20 each and employees between 61 and 65 years of age account for just 0.2%.

From the youngest age of 16 to the highest age of 65, there’s at least one employee at almost every age. Nobody at Digitec Galaxus is 60 or 64 years old right now. The largest share is 26 years old (112 employees), which corresponds to 6.7% of our workforce.

In conclusion, we can truly say that Digitec Galaxus is a young company.

Note: the data refers to the citizenship of our staff. Dual citizens were counted for two countries each if the dual citizenship was stated in the data set.
