Designed for flying, but landed on the couch

Dagsmejan, the pyjama experts, have recently launched a travel and loungewear collection. Are the jacket and pants just as good for chilling at home as they are on a flight?

Sweatpants are one of those things. You’ve probably heard Karl Lagerfeld’s famous quote on this topic. The fashion designer, who died in 2019, said:

«Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.»

Yet, there’s no evidence to suggest whether the great Karl ever said this (article in German).

Thanks for sticking with me. I thought it was absolutely necessary to include the sweat pant discourse. It’s important I start off by saying that wearing them isn’t a fashion sin. My wife, on the other hand, is of a different opinion. When I wore the Dagsmejan travel and loungewear set for the first time, she looked at it like a child looks at a plate of vegetables: sceptical and curious.

I could read her thoughts: «Is he serious?!» Don’t worry, darling, I replied. It’s for a product test. We already know how good Dagsmejan’s pyjamas are – we only ever reach for them now. So I thought I’d give the new travel and loungewear collection a chance.

I get a set consisting of a top, hoodie and pants. None of which are a bargain – 140 francs for the top, 160 for the pants and around 200 for the hoodie is quite a statement. In return, you get something that’s exclusively made in Europe. The fabric is knitted and dyed in Portugal and is made from eucalyptus fibres and cotton. It’s then sewn in Romania. Production is certified in accordance with the strict Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Fine fabric, that’s all there is to say.

The collection’s primarily designed and made for travelling. Dagsmejan founder and CEO Andreas Lenzhofer chucked on one of these travel suits and posed for a LinkedIn post at Zurich Airport. I haven’t tried it out in the air yet. My trip to Hamburg’s Galaxus office in economy class didn’t seem like the right occasion. I knew that once I arrived, I’d have to take a suburban train ride in the grim autumn weather straight to the office. Turning up in a tracksuit didn’t feel appropriate. Perhaps Lagerfeld’s quote has left its mark after all.

Instead, I go for the hoodie look – Dagsmejan calls it a «travel jacket» - when working from home and in my free time. It’s the smart little touches that have me constantly reaching for it. There are two discreet side zipper pockets that don’t protrude. There’s another small zippered pocket sewn into the left arm, where I like to carry my Airpods. It’s the perfect place to keep them safe.

A compartment for the Airpods, ID and credit card – perfect.

The best thing about it? The material. Cheap hoodies are often made from really thick cotton, sometimes they’ll have a touch of polyester too. Dagsmejan’s hoodie – I mean, the travel jacket – is different. The fabric, on the outside and inside, is silky-smooth. I literally slip into it, nothing scratches or rubs. A very fine weave lends the piece a certain elegance and ease. The hood’s so light I can hardly feel it on my back.

From now on, I don’t need to get involved with the discussions about the office ventilation – I’m wearing my temperature-regulating hoodie.

I can wear the jacket when the room temperature’s 22 degrees at home and keep it on when I go shopping in the cool 12-degree autumn air. This is where the Dagsmejan fabric really comes into its own, keeping you either cool or warm. It’s just like when I wear the pyjamas – no matter the season, I have a better night’s sleep.

I’m confident this travel and lounge wear will handle the different temperatures of a flight well – from the taxi to the terminal, to security check, boarding and into the cabin. The latter always being far too hot or too cold. Even just vegging out on the sofa watching Netflix, I still look great in the travel jacket.

Loose jacket, short pants

The cut of the jacket is rather loose, my size L has a chest width of 119 centimetres. When you consider 82 kilos of weight is distributed over 191 centimetres of my body, the jacket’s rather wide. If I took a size M, the sleeves would be a little too short. Being somewhere between a size M and L, is a common problem I have. Perhaps you’ll have a better idea and choose the right size for you, now you’ve heard my experience.

Dagsmejan describes the cut of the pants as «semi-fitted». In simple terms, this means size L pants have a waist length of 85 centimetres. That would be just under a 34 waist for a pair of jeans. The inside leg’s just under 77 centimetres, which corresponds to 30 inches. For me, the pants are too wide at the top and too short for my long legs. Ankle grazers are supposed to be in, especially with a wide-leg look – they’re not for me, though. I showed our fashion editor Stephanie the travel set. She’s less critical than I am, has a better understanding of current trends – and has approved the pants. She said I’d look good in it on a business trip, too. I just hope she’s serious and wasn’t just trying to flatter her boss.

Photographer Chris said he still needed new photos for an article on «hackers» and I could even pull that off with my travel jacket.

Despite her reassurance, I can’t imagine taking a flight in business class wearing a matching jacket and pant set. I’d feel like I’d been defeated. It’d certainly be a comfy option. But I don’t want to be lumped together with people who wear very comfortable but very unstylish clothes for travelling. Believe it or not, I still have some control of my life.

In a nutshell

My new favourite piece in my wardrobe

The loungewear jacket from Dagsmejan is one of my favourite items of clothing. For me, it’s worth the money because it’s outrageously comfortable, functional and also elegant – at least in the hoodie range. There’s a noticeable difference in material and manufacturing compared to «normal» hoodies. The fact the material and production are sustainable and fair already helps.

My opinion on the cut of the pants isn’t included in the star rating. The five stars are for the jacket. I recommend ordering the pants if you want the complete travel suit, and then see if the size fits you. You can always send them back if not.
