Waves à la carte in Valais
by Michael Restin
"Swiss Surfing" launches a tour that connects the country's spots and is open to all. A few championship titles are also at stake.
The "Edelweiss Surf Tour" combines what the local surf landscape now offers: "River Surfing", "Stationary Waveriding" and "Wavepool Surfing". The surfing will take place on river waves, on facilities with stationary waves and in the new showpiece, the wave pool in Valais.
Everyone from the age of eight can take part. "Junior Girls" and "Junior Boys", "Women" and "Men" are the categories. You can register here, and you can watch anyway. It is always worthwhile.
Professionals are also welcome and basically the best surfers per discipline will be crowned, regardless of their nationality. "Our mission is to make surfing in Switzerland accessible in a low-threshold way, to convey the fun of it, to promote the sport of surfing and to bring the community together," says Dario Müller, the event and competition manager of the Swiss Surfing Federation.
But since an association is still an association, the other mission is to comply with the statutes. Therefore it becomes briefly technical: On the one hand the "Swiss Surf Association SSA" is called now only "Swiss Surfing". On the other hand, you have to fulfill a few conditions if you speculate on a national championship title. You need a Swiss passport or a Swiss residence certificate and you have to have the "Swiss Surfing Active" license (you can buy it for 50 francs). The Swiss River Surf Champion, Swiss Stationary Waveriding Champion and Swiss Wavepool Surfing Champion titles will be awarded, as well as the cross-discipline Edelweiss Surf Tour Champion title.
Everything clear? No? Oh yes, one is missing in the flood of titles: The "Swiss Surfing Championship" for ocean surfing will logically not take place in the pool, but will be held from October 9 to 15 in Loredo, Spain. And everywhere applies: No master has fallen from the sky yet. From the board, however, and that is fun with or without a title.
