Battle of the 10 peanut butters

Not all peanut butter is created equal. As a self-confessed peanut butter junkie, I wanted to know exactly what’s what and tested all 10 organic varieties currently sold on Galaxus. I ended up pushing my limits a little in the process.

I love peanut butter! Eating it is somewhat of a daily ritual for me. That’s why I thought it would be an incredibly clever idea to test every organic peanut butter on Galaxus in search of the very best one. But with each spoonful of that creamy, nutty gold, I found myself doubting my own brilliance more and more. As tasty as the stuff is, trying 10 varieties will tire out even the biggest peanut butter fan. Still, it was worth it. I can now confidently report which product I’ll be reaching for again and which one will never wind up in my shopping cart.

Long overdue

Out of habit, I’d been buying the same type of peanut butter for ages, never pausing to think about other options. Oh, how naive I was! It took being gifted a special jar of peanut butter to show me the error of my ways. This jar turned my world upside down, sparking a long-overdue flame to explore the world of pureed peanuts.

How I tested it

My test includes every organic peanut butter currently available on Galaxus today – 10 in total. I grouped them into smooth and crunchy varieties and gave them 1 to 5 stars each.

To get the best possible consistency and flavour, I opened all the jars before the test, stirred in the oil that had separated, and left them in the fridge for a day.

Now for the results.

Smooth peanut butter

5th place: Naturkraftwerke peanut butter

This unsalted peanut butter genuinely made me feel a little queasy. That hasn’t happened to me since childhood. The butter’s pale greyish, unappetising colour, odd hint of raw peas and cardboard, and grainy texture are probably down to the peanuts having been processed unroasted. And it’s probably not aided by the fact that it contains a biomass powder with inactivated bacteria (Propionibacterium freudenreichii), which is supposed to support digestion. This peanut butter is enriched with vitamin B12. It might be good for digestion and «healthy», but it’s definitely not good for your taste buds. So no – absolutely not a recommendation to buy.

4th place: Jean Hervé purée cacahuète

This one is alright, and that’s it. This unsalted peanut butter has a subtle roasted aroma. So far, so good. But the longer I keep the slightly grainy cream in my mouth, the more I get the suspicion that the peanuts used in it were already past their prime. It’s fine for use in sauces, but if you’re planning on spooning it straight out of the jar, I wouldn’t recommend it.

3rd place: Rapunzel peanut butter

This unsalted peanut butter is good. Its texture is incredibly delicate and feels wonderfully velvety in the mouth. Even so, it’s not quite good enough for me to call it «great». The nuts could do with more roasting and a good pinch of salt. So, Rapunzel, I’m afraid you’re not quite at the top of the tower, err, podium.

Joint 2nd place: Koro salted peanut butter

Koro’s salted peanut butter really stands out. It’s slightly firmer in texture, dark caramel in colour and more intense in flavour than the others. But slightly smoky, roasted notes reminiscent of coffee dominate, both in terms of smell and taste. It still tastes great, but it’s definitely not your typical peanut butter.

Joint 2nd place: Alnatura smooth peanut butter

Almost perfect! This silky-smooth, creamy peanut butter is one of my favourites in the «smooth» category. The peanut flavour and roast level are perfectly balanced. The only thing missing, dear Alnatura peanut butter team, is a little salt. Add that and the recipe would border on divine perfection. Even so, this peanut butter is an absolute treat for the palate. I highly recommend it!

4 stars

1st place: Whole Earth creamy peanut butter

This salted peanut butter, with its light caramel colour, is a must for peanut lovers. It’s got great flavour with a pleasant roasted taste, the right amount of salt, and a wonderful mouthfeel. It’s delicious straight from the spoon or spread on bread with a little jam. Delicious! Or, to quote Britney Spears, «Gimme, gimme… more!»

Crunchy peanut butter

4th place: Alnatura crunchy peanut butter

This unsalted peanut butter tastes decent enough, but the roasted note is a little too dominant. I also think it contains far too few peanut pieces to have earned the «crunchy» label. There’s room for improvement there, dear Alnatura team.

3rd place: Terra Sana crunchy peanut butter

Same story here: this unsalted peanut butter tastes good – and that’s it. The roasted flavour is too strong, and there aren’t enough peanut pieces. Mixed into vanilla ice cream it works, but for straight-up snacking I’d go for another product.

This crunchy peanut butter is top-notch. Great salt level, great peanut flavour, great roast level, great ratio of chunks and the perfect creamy base – I’m hooked!

1st place: Whole Earth crunchy peanut butter

This salted peanut butter is perfection on every level. It has an unmatched balance of peanut flavour and roasted notes, paired with plenty of peanut pieces. This peanut butter is also a real treat for the eyes; it contains peanut pieces with and without the skin, creating a delightful interplay of colours that tempts you to dig right in. It’s heaven for the mouth and eyes! This is how peanut butter should be.

Verdict

I was absolutely certain I wouldn’t be able to look at peanut butter for at least a week after my test, but the sacrifice was worth it. Whole Earth’s creamy and crunchy peanut butters are my new go-to shopping cart fillers. And if I’m ever in the mood for some variety, I’ll order the smooth butter from Koro or the crunchy one from Rapunzel.

On a final note, my craving for peanut butter came back much quicker than expected. Just 12 hours after the test, I was already stirring a large spoonful of heaven into my breakfast muesli. I think ours truly is a love that will never fade.
