The poetry of everyday life: why lived chaos is more beautiful than catalogue aesthetics
by Pia Seidel
Making a bed. How difficult can that be? Very difficult, as I found out for myself at the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse in Zurich.
I've made my bed hundreds of times in my life. It's a love-hate relationship. Awkward and tedious. But as soon as it's freshly made, I look forward to my bed all the more. Making the bed is one of those activities that you don't think about. You just do it. A necessary evil. I can't do it, I just do it.
Jamie Nimtz showed me how wrong I was with this assumption at the "Please Disturb" hotel open day. Jamie is in her final year of training as a hotel specialist at 25hours Hotel Langstrasse in Zurich. Making beds is her job*. The likeable 18-year-old is supposed to teach me how to make beds. I'm still laughing now. Soon only Jamie should be laughing.
She watches my fingers very closely as I unfold the sheet. The first movement fits by chance. After that, nothing fits. "The sheet is creased here. Do it again." I'm used to fixed sheets. And I don't take it too seriously at home, the bed wrinkles after one night anyway. "No, we never touch the outside of the duvet cover. It's unhygienic," says Jamie and makes me unpack the duvet again and put a new one on.
"You can fold the pillow in half. Then it simply goes into the cover". I've learnt something again. I am sweating. From exertion. From nervousness. The next mistake comes and is punished with a "No, not like that" from Jamie. The big cushion goes all the way to the back, then the small one in front of it and not next to it. The corners are not quite right anyway. The bedspread goes at the bottom of the bed, not in the centre. The bed is made after 15 minutes. The target: 3 minutes. "That would be a grade 2 in the LAP," says Jamie mercilessly. She should know.
Jamie's final apprenticeship exam is coming up soon. I don't doubt for a second that she'll pass. The way she has trained me, she could accompany the final apprenticeship exam as an expert. At home, I made up my bed after our meeting and cheated a little. I touched the outside of the cover. Sorry, Jamie. I wish you every success in the LAP!
*That's an exaggeration. It just sounds good. In reality, a hotel manager does a lot more: she keeps guest rooms clean, helps with breakfast and banquets and welcomes guests at reception. If you want to see more videos of me, where I hope I look better than here, then follow my author profile below. When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
