Almost all lid openers tested by K-Tipp are good to very good
The silver onions for raclette or Grosi's jam for breakfast: there are lids on everything that are extremely tightly closed, especially before they are opened for the first time. Lid openers are supposed to provide a remedy in such cases. K-Tipp has tested them.
Lid screwdrivers
For the test, the Swiss magazine for consumers sent ten lid openers to the German laboratory Applitest in Nuremberg. The test subjects there: two men and two women aged 60, 78, 85 and 94. Among other things, they tested whether and how well the lids of various vacuum jars and PET bottles can be opened with the devices, how easy they are to use and how robust they are.
The latter was the downfall of the Zyliss lid opener tested. A piece of plastic broke off the handle for opening vacuum jars after just a short time, writes K-Tipp. In addition, parts of the inner material came loose when opening PET bottles. Zyliss' «5in1» opener therefore fails the test due to its lack of robustness; it is the only «unsatisfactory» in the test.
The ones that do what they're supposed to
Let's move on to the usable lid openers, and according to K-Tipp, most of them are. The experts awarded seven of the ten appliances tested the rating «Good» with Swiss school grades between 5.3 and 4.8. These include two models from Westmark. «Glory» (grade 5.3) is the most expensive lid opener tested, «Moby Dick» (grade 5) the cheapest.
Other good lid openers can be found at Migros, Betty Bossi, Jumbo or here. The models from Gefu and Kuhn Rikon also make it into the «Good» category with a score of 4.8.
They are the best
The test victory goes to two lid openers. The models from Coop and Brabantia both received a score of 5.5 and an overall rating of «Very good». Strikingly, the Coop lid opener tested cost almost half as much as the Brabantia model at just under ten francs.
The Coop lid opener won the test.
In general, it can be said that almost all models received good to very good marks in the «practical test Open». What K-Tipp noticed, however:
«Vacuum jars with a large lid diameter caused the most difficulties for the test subjects. Two of the seniors did not have enough strength to open the lids despite the support of the openers.»
Do you have a lid opener? And why is the jar so tightly screwed shut again? Write it in the comments.
