A global star turns 60 - Tom Hanks' career and best films

Tom Hanks celebrates his 60th birthday on 7 July! The perfect occasion to take a closer look at Hank's career and honour the highlights of the multiple Oscar and Golden Globe winner.
How it all began
Hanks discovered his interest in acting during his high school years. He often went to the theatre and took part in acting courses, where he gained his first experience. After finishing high school, he began studying acting. He also worked for three years at the Great Lakes Theatre Festival, where he gained experience in everything from set design to lighting and sound engineering. He also played the role of Proteus in Shakespeare's "Two Gentlemen of Verona", for which he was honoured with the "Cleveland Critics Circle Award" for best leading actor.
The breakthrough
In 1979, Hanks moved to New York, where he landed his first film and television roles. Among other things, he appeared in sitcoms and his first comedies. He then received offers for more serious roles, such as in "Philadelphia", for which he was awarded his first Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1994. The very next year, he received his second Oscar for his portrayal of the mentally retarded Forrest Gump in the film of the same name. After that, he continued to impress in various films in which he played the leading roles.
Hanks is one of the greatest actors of our time precisely because he always played his roles believably. It is not without good reason that he has already won two Oscars and four Golden Globe Awards - to name just the most important honours - for Best Actor in a Leading Role in his career to date. We hope that Hanks doesn't retire for a long time yet and continues to share his talent with us!
