5 easy tips to create more space and order in your closet

Is your wardrobe threatening to burst? That’s not necessarily due to lack of space. Before you buy a new one, give these hacks a try.
Even in a seemingly limitless closet, things can get cramped. Chaos spreads where there’s a lack of order. But with a bit of a knack for organisation and the right storage solutions, you can get the problem under control. Here are five tips that will immediately make your closet much more spacious.
1. Use multilayer hangers
Multiple hangers allow you to hang your clothes in a particularly space-saving way. They come in numerous styles – for pants, skirts, blouses and more.
If you own plenty of hangers but are just lacking the space to hang them up, there are special hooks to help you make the most of the limited space. They allow you to attach multiple hangers to each other. That way, you not only save space on the bar, but you can even group outfits. Don’t feel like spending the bucks? Alternatively, you can upcycle aluminium can tabs for this purpose.
2. Give everything its own place
Every item should have its own place in your closet. This prevents clutter and optimises the available space. Especially accessories like belts, scarves and ties often wind up thrown in at random. To maintain an overview and order, consider purchasing special hangers.
Drawers also tend towards the explosive look. Are you one of those people who get dressed in a hurry, can’t find what they need and rummage through your stuff, leaving behind a mess? Then adding in some boxes with compartments may help – along with the will to stay organised, of course.
3. Use the floor and the top shelf
Closets with just one clothes rail typically leave a lot of space on the floor. Why not put it to good use? Place stackable storage boxes inside that you can use like drawers, or store clothes in them that you won’t need again until the seasons change. You can even put up a little shelf to store your bags and shoes.
Just like the floor, the top shelf also often falls into neglect. And yet it’s perfect for storing things you don’t use often, such as handbags and shoes for special occasions or seasonal clothing. You can also temporarily store items there you hardly ever wear anymore – and if you don’t find yourself missing them after half a year, you can get rid of them altogether.
4. Fold as much as possible
Folded clothes usually take up less space than when hung up. If you find your clothes rail is getting crowded, try rearranging pieces that can be easily stored folded. These include knitwear, stretch tops, T-shirts, tank tops and jeans. Now, you might have a bunch of pieces that aren’t prone to wrinkling and fold well, but you might not have enough drawers. In that case, a hanging storage solution like the ones below might prove most handy.

5. Clamp and hang long items
Your closet lacks the vertical space for long dresses or jumpsuits? Here’s what you can do: clip the hem end to a second hanger with clamps and hang both up on the bar – or better yet, use one of the clips mentioned in Tip #1. Et voilà, your long piece of clothing is now half as long. If your pants are too long for your closet, place them folded in half over a hanger.
