    Synology and Salt Fiber Box

Hi, I'll try here as Salt refuses to help me. I have a Synology DS218 and recently switched to Salt - since then a connection via DDNS is no longer possible, only with QuickConnect, which is slower and in my opinion less secure. I have opened all ports for Drive and VPN in the fibre box manager, Synology has also checked this, but the ports are and remain closed. Salt writes about this: "As mentioned Salt works with the IPv6, normally purposes (like NAS), are configured for a public IPv4." I'm getting nowhere here. Fortunately, everything works via QuickConnect, but it is, as I said, slow and I would like to be able to set up the solution that suits me. There is practically nothing to be found on YouTube or the Internet about the Salt Fibre Box. Who has experience with it and knows what to do? Salt on the website still: "Functions such as access to your network via the Fiber Box and port forwarding are possible with the IPv6 protocol. If you need to set up an Internet-accessible service with a device that does not yet support IPv6, you can request activation of the public IPv4 address option (CHF 9.95/month)." I'm an amateur user and already pretty proud that I even know what port forwarding is, but my IT latin ends here, and I feel a bit left out in the cold by Salt. Or as they put it: "We offer support for all questions regarding your fibre connection as well as the devices and services included in the Salt Fiber offer (Internet, TV, fixed-line telephony) within the scope of "normal private use" in accordance with our General Terms and Conditions." So a NAS is not normal private use. Okay. Thank you! Thomas.

    Fast NAS

what does it take to get/upgrade/buy a fast NAS. i have large lightroom libraries with RAW images around 45mb per image, do panoramas up to 1gb per image or hdr edits. so lots of large image data that often needs to be loaded quickly. I have the synology 216play with 2x 6tb wd red disks. 4bay is also possible with a new purchase. I would like to leave my other hardware as it is for now. macbook pro mid 2017, i7 quadcore, ram 16gb lpddr3, graphics radeon pro 560 4gb.

    Future storage/backup strategy

Dear community, I am a freelance photographer and in 2015 I bought a MacPro with a LaCie 5big 20TB as main storage. The main storage runs in RAID 5 and I therefore have effectively 16TB of storage available. For cost reasons, I bought two smaller LaCie 2big 12TB units as backup. One unit is directly connected to the computer as a TimeMachine backup, while the second 12TB unit is stored externally at another location. The two backups are swapped around once a month. The entire system runs via Thunderbolt 2. Simple and effective, which I like. Now, unfortunately, the backup is close to the 12TB limit and is full. Logically, I still have around 4TB of free main storage. Basically, I am satisfied with the LaCie products. Now the question is how I should proceed. The image resolutions of the cameras and thus the storage requirements are getting higher and higher. Should I spend a lot of money and buy 3x LaCie 6big 48TB or 60TB and have peace of mind for a few years, or switch to the (complicated?) Synology system, where I can apparently keep adding more disks? Or just one backup instead of two. Specifically: A large main storage at home and a Synology backup externally at a friend's house (separated by location). My only concerns are storage, backup (security) and reliability. All the Synology apps and cloud/media services are not important to me. What would be your approach in my case? Thanks for any feedback.

    Backup for individual folders

Is it possible to backup only certain folders on a Synology 2-bay NAS? I want to have a backup of the relevant folders and is it a problem if I use two different sized HDDs? As an example: HDD 1 (8TB): Project files, documents, assets, plugins, downloads, movies, music, etc. HDD 2 (2TB): Backup of project files and documents

Which is the better NAS for using Plex: the DS218+ or DS218j ?

Hi, I have recently become a happy user of Plex and, due to a lack of space on my hard drive, I would like to buy a Synology NAS system. The price plays a big role for me, but I am willing to spend a little more money for the "more suitable" product. Now to my question: I use a MacBook Pro and most of my film files are available in MP4 format on my connected hard drive. Even after some time of research, I have not been able to fully understand the difference between the DS218+ and the DS218j, as I am not extremely technically savvy. My intended use of the NAS system: - Only for movies and possibly documents/backup. - Streaming via Plex app at home on the TV - Streaming while commuting on the IPad Pro via the Plex app Can anyone help me decide if the DS218+ is worth the extra cost or not? If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to hear from you :) Many greetings

Successor wanted for a Synology DS713+

Hello together I have the following situation: I have a Synology 713+ (with 4GB RAM) that is getting on in years, a DX513 is connected to it and 4x WD Gold HDDs with 10TB are installed in both at the moment. (Raid 5 operation) and the whole thing is connected to a UPS (APC Back UPS RS 550G). I need a new NAS (High performance --> High read and write values --> Now I reach about 117MB read and 111MB write. According to the internet, my HDDs should reach read and write values of about 250 MB). Certainly a stronger CPU than at the moment (Atom D2700 --> 2 core with 1MB chache at 2.13GHz.) An expansion capability with M2 ssd as cache is desirable (plug-in card). Also an expandability of the RAM of 16GB or 32GB would be great. I would also like to use the UPS and, if possible, the DX513. Which NAS should I take a closer look at? Which one would meet my criteria the most? Thanks for your competent help
