Gravel cycling clothing tested

Not all gravel is the same - we have realised this time and again, and not just in several bike comparison tests in the past. A race lasting just a few hours, such as "The Traka" in Girona, Spain, places completely different demands on the "material" than a multi-day adventure trip through Scandinavia or over the Alps. Factors such as aerodynamics, comfort and payload are therefore weighted very differently. These characteristics can be applied almost one-to-one to the gravel clothing tested. Pure "race jerseys" such as the models from the Danish manufacturer Pas Normal Studios or the Signature Pro Jersey from Canyon can also be seen on the starting lines, or rather on the riders of classic cycling marathons or racing bike criteriums. Among other things, they offer high breathability, a close-fitting, "aerodynamic" cut and a very low weight, but the parameters of long-term comfort and storage space are often not among their strengths. The models in our comparison test show that there is another way. The Adventure Jersey from the Italian manufacturer Q36.5, for example, is aerodynamically excellent and at the same time has back pockets that offer more space than those of a normal road bike jersey. Alé sews three additional pockets on top of the three standard pockets, while Sportful adds two easily accessible mesh pockets at the side waist. The Scottish clothing brand Endura uses seven larger and smaller pockets in its GV500 Reiver Short Sleeve model. Nevertheless, this jersey also has a sporty, but not skin-tight cut and is highly breathable. Not everyone will utilise the full load capacity of these jerseys. The big advantage of the systems is that you can take more with you, but you can also distribute your "hand luggage" better on your body. Many models in this comparison test are made from a mix of materials, from thinner or thicker or more robust or finer, more breathable or more insulating fabrics. Maap and Q36.5 use different proportions of the natural fibre merino in their jerseys. This ensures excellent temperature management and good moisture transport. It is also naturally odour-inhibiting and feels very soft and comfortable against the skin.
