Fil d’Ecosse is a cotton fiber that has been refined through the mercerization process. Mercerization reduces the length of the fibers, alters their cross-section, and causes them to swell. These structural changes result in higher strength, better dyeability, and a wash-resistant, silky sheen. This process was developed in the mid-19th century by John Mercer and leads to higher quality in textiles.
