Fil d’Ecosse – the special cotton fiber
Fil d’Ecosse refers to a cotton fiber that has been refined through the mercerization process. Mercerizing cotton reduces the length of the fibers, changes their cross-section, and causes the fibers to swell. These structural changes result in higher strength, better dyeability, and a wash-resistant, silky sheen. This process was developed by John Mercer in the mid-19th century. The refining process leads to higher quality in textiles. However, mercerization is also a very expensive process and is therefore only applied to high-quality garments.
