Fil d'Ecosse is a cotton fibre that has been refined by the mercerisation process. The mercerisation of cotton reduces the length of the fibres, the cross-section changes and the fibres swell. These structural changes give the cotton greater strength, better dyeability and a wash-resistant, silk-like sheen. This process was developed by John Mercer in the middle of the 19th century. The finishing process leads to a higher quality in textiles. However, mercerisation is also a very expensive process and is therefore only used for high quality garments.
