The history of the Heimhuber photographers is almost as old as photography itself. In 1876, journeyman photographer Joseph Heimhuber came to Sonthofen and set up his first daylight studio. The first high mountain photographs were taken a short time later around 1880 under the most difficult conditions. For almost 140 years, Heimhuber's photographers captured the Allgäu and neighbouring Alpine regions on daguerreotypes, metal and glass plates and celluloid. There was hardly a cultural or social event, a mountain, landscape or town view that they did not capture - every motif a historical document!
