The history of the Heimhuber photographers is almost as old as photography itself. In 1876, the photographer's apprentice Joseph Heimhuber came to Sonthofen and set up his first daylight studio. The first high-altitude photographs were taken shortly thereafter around 1880 under the most challenging conditions. For nearly 140 years, the Heimhuber photographers captured the Allgäu and neighboring Alpine regions on daguerreotypes, metal, glass plates, and celluloid. Hardly any cultural or social event, hardly any mountain, landscape, or local view that they did not capture - each motif is a historical document!.
