On March 27, 1858, a decree included the striped undershirt in the prescribed clothing for sailors. This knitted fabric, produced on special looms known as Métiers Rachel, is referred to as "unravelable" and consists of stitches formed simultaneously. These large-scale weaving and knitting machines, which combine weaving and knitting processes, emerged in the mid-19th century. From the 1950s onwards, the applications expanded, and today it is primarily used in the field of technical textiles. This scratch-resistant cotton gives the garment excellent stability in both stitch directions and limits the deformation of the knit with horizontal, well-parallel stripes.
