On March 27, 1858, a decree included the striped undershirt in the prescribed clothing for sailors. This knitwear, produced on special looms known as Métiers Rachel, is referred to as "unravelable" and consists of stitches formed simultaneously. These large-scale weaving and knitting machines, which combine weaving and knitting processes, emerged in the mid-19th century. From the 1950s onwards, the areas of application expanded, and today they are primarily used in the field of technical textiles. This scratch-resistant cotton provides excellent support in both stitch directions and limits the deformation of the knit with horizontal, well-parallel stripes.
