These products are divided into infant formula and follow-on formula. Infant formula (also called "pre-formula") can be used from birth and its nutrient composition is adapted to the requirements for the exclusive feeding of infants. It is not a substitute with an equivalent claim, but a regulated alternative in the event that breastfeeding does not take place. Follow-on formula is intended for the phase from the sixth month onwards, when complementary food is introduced in parallel. Its composition is tailored to the changed energy and nutrient requirements in this developmental phase and differs in its recipe from infant formula. The numbering is crucial for choosing the right product. It indicates for which developmental stage of the child the respective recipe is designed and should be chosen according to the child's age.
