Microfiber is a collective term for fibers whose individual threads are finer than half the diameter of a silk fiber, finer than a third of the diameter of a cotton fiber, and finer than one hundredth of the diameter of a human hair. The base for manufacturing the cloths is usually polyester, polyamide, or polyacrylic, with a ratio of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide yielding the optimal microfiber. Compared to other materials, microfiber has a significantly higher volume at the same weight. Additionally, the wedge-shaped structure of the individual fibers contributes to this. These factors result in a much larger surface area than other materials possess. As a result, microfiber cleaning cloths have a more optimal surface for capturing dirt than traditional cleaning rags, allowing them to bind more dirt.
