The hazelnut is the round, brown fruit of the wild-growing, but also cultivated hazel shrub. There are two botanical varieties: the Zellernuss and the Lambertnuss. The hazelnut has been used as food by humans since the Stone Age. It was considered sacred by the Celts, and the Germans dedicated it to their god Thor. The Romans brought it to Italy, where it was cultivated.
