Flaxseeds are the seeds of the flax plant – a delicately blue-flowering plant that not only provides flaxseeds but also offers a variety of usable plant fibers. Flaxseeds can serve as a suitable source of dietary fiber and omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid) in a balanced diet. Additionally, they contain significant amounts of potassium, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and iron, as well as vitamin B1. However, the hard shell of the flaxseed prevents these nutrients from being absorbed in the intestine.

This is where thorough chewing of the seeds or a pre-treatment of the flaxseeds – dextrinization – comes into play: The flaxseeds are crushed, which breaks the shell and opens the way for digestive juices to access the valuable components. It is advisable to soak the flaxseeds in water – this causes the mucilage to swell. Swollen flaxseeds fill the intestine and can, based on experience, help facilitate bowel movements.
