The noble classic black tea delights with a hint of lemony freshness, thanks to the organically cultivated bergamot. Earl Grey is a tea blend that originally consisted solely of Chinese tea varieties and was lightly flavored with the fine, fragrant-bitter oil of bergamot. The tea is named after Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), who abolished the East India Company's price monopoly in the tea trade with China in 1833 as British Prime Minister. However, the tea is not actually an invention of this Earl Grey. Legend has it that during a storm on the crossing, the cargo was jumbled up, and bergamot oil spilled onto the tea bales. Lord Grey had the damages shown to him upon the ship's arrival in London and decided to taste the tea first before deciding whether the cargo should be destroyed. The tea was so well received by friends and acquaintances that the Earl decided to bring the flavored tea to market. Today, Earl Grey is no longer mixed solely from Chinese tea varieties but also includes Indian varieties, and it pairs excellently with lightly salty dishes and small snacks.
