The large, sweet Medjool dates come from Morocco and were long reserved for the royal family there. A disease nearly wiped out all the palms in North Africa. Thanks to some saved cuttings, the variety is now cultivated in Israel and California. Enjoyed as a natural energy booster, chopped dates can replace sugar in dishes like apple or fruit salads. In addition to B vitamins, the dates are also rich in potassium and magnesium.
