Product details

There are three major plant families that, as evidence shows, were cultivated in the Mediterranean region over 5,000 years ago and have persisted into modern times: grains (bread), the olive tree (oil), and the grapevine (wine). During a famine, one could survive solely on these three plants. All three plants hold significant symbolic value. Christianity has ensured that grapevines spread throughout Europe and later across the world.

The grapevine is a gift from the gods, the emblem of Dionysus. It is consumed and also used as a medicinal plant, especially the red wine. At the end of October or the beginning of November, some leaves begin to turn red until eventually all are red. This phenomenon does not occur in all varieties, but only in dye grapes, whose juice is red. The flesh of this variety is not translucent like that of other red grape varieties, but almost black.

This coloration is due to anthocyanins, which invigorate the walls of blood vessels. This effect is further enhanced by the astringent properties of tannins.

The flavonoids found in red grapes promote circulation in the legs. An infusion made from grape leaves can be consumed or used for foot baths.

Plant parts: Leaf.
Botanical name: Vitis vinifera.
