Mint has been used since ancient times in many Eastern European countries, the Mediterranean region, as well as in Egypt, Greece, and China. Further north, Druids discovered the beneficial properties of mint. They cultivated the plant in the peat bogs and marshy areas of the Milly la Forêt region. The Chapel of Saint Blaise in France was established in the 11th century as a hospital for lepers. Today, it houses the Conservatory for Fragrant, Medicinal, and Culinary Plants.

The word "mint" comes from the Greek name of the nymph Mintha. Hades, the god of the underworld, was in love with Mintha. The jealous Persephone transformed Mintha into a small aromatic plant, which came to be known as mint. The desperate Hades roamed the land in search of his lost love.

Mint is one of our most well-known medicinal plants. It is also used in cooking, for example in tagines, with peas, potatoes, and more.
