The stinging nettle is the only plant that can be recognised with your eyes closed, says the joker. Touching the plant burns so much that the stinging nettle has given its name to a skin reaction: Nettle rash or urticaria. Urticaria meant whipping with nettles to cure rheumatism and not to punish. The stinging hairs on the nettle are as fragile as glass. They break in a similar way to the tip of ampoules. This is how histamine penetrates the skin, causing the burning sensation.

Stinging nettle is a kind of panacea. It was almost forgotten until the end of the 20th century, but seems to be experiencing a renaissance in the 21st century. Nettles can be consumed over a long period of time without any concerns.
