Product details

Eucalyptus originally comes from Australia and Tasmania. Eucalyptus is extremely resilient. The plant has unique biological properties: its vertically oriented leaves produce chlorophyll on both the upper and lower sides. Eucalyptus has what are known as lignotubers, woody swellings underground that contain dormant buds, from which the plant can sprout again after events like a fire. The seeds are enclosed in very robust capsules. Some species can grow up to 150 meters tall. Once the plant has settled in a location, it is difficult to get rid of it.

For this reason, eucalyptus has been cultivated in many parts of the world to drain swamps and drive away the mosquitoes living there. This has indeed been successful, but the widespread proliferation of eucalyptus trees in these areas has negatively impacted biodiversity. Additionally, eucalyptus forests are highly flammable, and in monoculture areas, massive wildfires occur. Since eucalyptus is also used as a cheap raw material for paper production, such areas continue to expand.

Part of the plant: Leaf.
Botanical name: Eucalyptus globulus.
