As so often, a coincidence led to the discovery: According to legend, Chinese black tea and citrusy bergamot oil were mixed in the hold of a ship that encountered a fierce storm on its way to England in 1833. Upon arrival, the Earl of Grey insisted on tasting the "tainted cargo" before deciding what to do with it. Fortunately, he was convinced by the fresh and tangy aroma of the tea; otherwise, Earl Grey would not be the versatile classic it is today. Whether sweetened or unsweetened, strong or gently refreshing, with or without milk – Earl Grey goes with everything!.
