I‘ve had this device for nearly a year now and it works extremely well. Sadly now when I do the treatments the device gets really really hot and its unbearable to continue without burning yourself. Is my device defect or is that normal?

Would say not normal. Mine has never got very hot, but always ventilates quite loudly.
