Sensitivity to pain is caused by the unprotected exposure of the dentin under the enamel. Stimuli such as cold, hot, sweet or sour can irritate the dental nerve and thus cause pain. Toothpaste, on the other hand, forms a repairing protective film on the pain-sensitive areas.
