Biodegradable products are made from materials that are completely broken down by naturally occurring microorganisms and converted into water, carbon dioxide and biomass. Unlike compostable products, they do not have to be degraded within a certain period of time. Cellulose and fibre products based on sugar cane and palm leaves as well as products based on starch plants dominate in production. It does not matter whether renewable or non-renewable, i.e. fossil resources, are used for production. Under real environmental conditions, biodegradable plastics break down over time into microplastics, which only decompose very slowly into their chemical components. Oxo-degradable plastics have also been enriched with additives that decompose into microplastic particles when exposed to heat or sunlight, but these hardly degrade at all.
