The Canti di lavoro tell of the struggles and hardships faced by female workers in the spinning mills and rice fields of the Po Valley at the beginning of the last century. Diseases such as malaria and yellow fever claimed the lives of many of these hard-working, mostly very young girls and women. All their suffering, as well as their longings and hopes, are reflected in the bittersweet melodies and lyrics of these now almost forgotten melancholic and defiant work songs.
