When the cheerful truck driver Iljas and the shy Asselj fall in love, they defy all conventions and run away together. The two get married, and soon little Samat is born. However, traditional roles run deep, and Iljas's hot-headed nature soon leads to his downfall. In an attempt to cross a mountain pass with a trailer, he fails miserably. Hurt in his pride, he withdraws from his wife and turns to alcohol. Tschingis Aitmatow tells a tragic love story set against the breathtaking backdrop of the mountain ranges of Kyrgyzstan.
