She is eight when her mother takes her and her sisters to the West, first to the emergency shelter in Marienfelde and then to Schleswig-Holstein. In the chaotic farmhouse, the thirteen-year-old can no longer stay and moves to West Berlin. Alongside social assistance, the student earns money by cleaning, meets her father, and loses him shortly after, graduates from high school, and encounters Stephan, her great love. When she remembers, it is the present. "Worlds Apart" is the moving story of an unusual youth full of breaks and uncertainties; a painfully beautiful testament to self-assertion that tells as precisely of shame and sorrow as it does of death and love.
