The friendship between Winnetou, the chief of the Apaches, and Old Shatterhand begins with bloody battles. As an envoy of the railway company, Old Shatterhand is tasked with thwarting the sinister plans of the bandit Santer, who intends to route the new line of the Great Western Railroad through Apache territory, contrary to agreements. Since the Apaches are unaware of Old Shatterhand's good intentions, they see him as an enemy and seek revenge. However, Winnetou recognizes in the captive his savior, who had just freed him from the hands of the hostile Kiowa.
