The citizens of the community of Alpen are skeptical when Anna von Betteray takes over as substitute for the pastor who has fallen ill. After all, she is divorced, blue-blooded, in her mid-30s, far too young for the post, and a woman. While Anna tries to come to terms with a dark chapter of her past and carefully modernize the congregation, her sister Maria's life is completely upended.
