Product details

Since the age of eight, Hildegard, who comes from a noble family, has been growing up in the Benedictine monastery of Disibodenberg. In the monastery, a place of silence, prayer, and obedience, the strict abbot Kuno holds the scepter firmly in his hand and entrusts Hildegard to her mentor Jutta of Sponheim. Jutta not only nurtures Hildegard's musical talent but also imparts her own knowledge to her. For years, Hildegard keeps her recurring religious visions to herself, fearing that no one would believe her. After the death of her mentor, the Benedictine monk Volmar encourages her to publish her visions, and Hildegard eventually receives permission from the Church to do so. In her struggle to find her own path within the faith community, Hildegard von Bingen founds the women's monastery of Rupertsberg near Bingen on the Rhine in 1150, despite all opposition. She serves as abbess and healer, composing and writing her now-famous books. With her success and charisma, Hildegard provokes fierce resistance within the Church and falls into a deep, nearly fatal crisis when her beloved student Richardis of Stade is called to a distant monastery and leaves her. But Hildegard is a fighter who knows that her work is not yet complete—and her reputation has long since spread far beyond the walls of the monastery.
