Jeremy Taylor (Joshua Jackson), a young publisher from London, is hired by his boss to visit former bestselling author Weldon Parish (Harvey Keitel) in Tuscany and sign a contract with him for a new book. After the death of his wife 20 years ago, the author retired to Tuscany and has so far declined all offers for a new book. When Jeremy arrives in Tuscany, it is exactly as he feared. Parish is extremely unfriendly and seems crazy. But Jeremy remains steadfast and soon Parish seems to show his other, true face. Parish, who still refuses to enter into negotiations over a new book, is nevertheless deeply impressed by the young man. When Jeremy also meets Paris' young daughter Isabella (Claire Forlani), he's in for it. He falls in love with her and soon he has to make a decision that could change his life completely...
