In the village of Tschechin in the Oderbruch, the innkeeper Abel Hradscheck lives beyond his means. He drinks, gambles, and showers his wife with expensive gifts. Deeply in debt, he finds himself in a precarious situation when the wine merchant Szulski visits him, pressing for payment. When Szulski dies in a storm the next day, Hradscheck quickly comes under suspicion in the village. Is he guilty, or was it an accident?
