The 14-year-old Mattie Ross is determined not to let the cold-blooded murder of her father go unpunished. Since the authorities are unable to help her, she decides to bring the cowardly killer Tom Chaney to justice by her own means. For $100, she hires the drunken and rough U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, who doesn't exactly adhere to the law himself. Reluctantly, he is persuaded by Mattie to take her along on the hunt for Chaney—across the lawless expanses of the prairie. However, they are not alone, as Texas Ranger LaBoeuf also wants to capture the fugitive to collect a bounty that has been placed on Chaney for another murder.
