Mathieu is a well-off businessman. When 18-year-old Conchita takes up employment with the widower as a housemaid, he falls for the attractive Spaniard. But Conchita consistently rejects his clumsy advances. Again and again she eludes him, but the love-struck Mathieu has long since fallen for Conchita.

For his last film based on the 1898 novel "La Femme et le Pantin" by Pierre Louÿs, Luis Buñuel had the brilliant idea of casting two actresses in the role of the femme fatale: Ángela Molina mimes the sensual seductress and Carole Bouquet the cool intellectual.
