After twelve years of military service, the conscientious Anselm Eibenschütz takes on the post of weights and measures inspector for the sake of his wife. He travelled through villages in a small wagon, checking the weights and measures of traders. Lonely in the midst of crooks and deserters, the gauger is betrayed by his wife, but he himself manages to put the biggest scoundrel of all behind bars. He falls in love with his girlfriend and enjoys a summer of happiness. But then his inevitable descent begins. Axel Corti reads Roth's captivating novel, which he wrote in exile in Paris in 1937.
