New York, mid-19th century: In an office building not worth mentioning, in a law firm not worth mentioning, a writer sits, looks at his work, at his office, at his life and decides: "I'd rather not." His supervisor doesn't understand what he means by that and tries to motivate his formerly productive employee. But no matter what he does, Bartleby is certain, "I'd rather not."
