A mysterious man makes a proposal to young Peter Schlemihl: he should trade his shadow for a purse that never empties. Schlemihl carelessly agrees and thus takes on the role of the eternal outsider. The deal cannot be undone unless he gives his soul for the shadow. Ultimately, Schlemihl finds solace in seven-league boots, with which he travels the world in search of plants. Achim Gertz reads from this wondrous story that suddenly made the naturalist and poet Adelbert von Chamisso world-famous in 1814.
