Marlen Haushofer was born in 1920 in Frauenstein, Upper Austria. She studied German philology in Vienna and Graz and later lived in Steyr. In 1946, she published her first text. "The Wall" was released in 1963, and her last novel, "The Attic," came out in 1969. Today, Marlen Haushofer is considered one of the pioneers of modern women's literature, alongside Ingeborg Bachmann. She received numerous literary awards, including the 1953 Promotion Award of the Austrian State Prize, the 1956 Theodor Körner Foundation Prize, the 1963 Arthur Schnitzler Prize, the 1965 and 1967 Children's Book Prize of the City of Vienna, and the 1968 Austrian State Prize for Literature.
