Product details

In 1961, just before the Wall cemented the division of Germany, Uwe Johnson published a novel: Karsch, a sports journalist from Hamburg, is invited to the GDR by his ex-girlfriend. There, he meets her new boyfriend Achim, a cyclist who is so successful that he is celebrated as a national hero. There are already two biographies about him, and Karsch is supposed to write the third book about Achim. However, the project fails due to differing perceptions between Achim and Karsch, between East and West. Through Charly Hübner's authentic reading, Johnson's concentrated and idiosyncratic language comes to life.
