An old house in the middle of the Elbmarsch, the power of nature and three generations of women who meet there again after years.
Two sisters with different lifestyles meet when their mother is dying. In the old thatched house in the Elbmarsch, the Hansen women have to face their past, with all its secrets and questions, and learn that an end can always be a beginning.
After a long time, the sisters Grete and Freya meet again in their parents' house. Their mother Wilhelmine has suffered a fainting spell, Freya arrives immediately from Berlin. She wants to help, but even more to escape her own life. Her boyfriend has left her, and with him the last hope of starting a family of her own.
Grete is also single, she has stayed in the small village on the Elbe all her life, an early pregnancy shattered her dreams of the wide world. She first took care of her daughter Anne, then Wilhelmine needed more and more support with house and farm. Grete's refuge is nature, the garden, but above all the nature reserve on the Elbe, where she works as a bird warden. When now, shortly before her fiftieth birthday, an unexpected chance to escape presents itself that she has long hoped for, she needs the support of her family once more than ever.
Anne also comes to be close to her grandmother. The relationship with her mother Grete is strained - certainly also because she has never revealed who Anne's father is. And Wilhelmine also has a secret on her lips.
